Outonomous welcomes Guggenheim Fellow Prof. Shuguang Zhang, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Shuguang Zhang is a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellow & Wilhelm Exner Medal Foundation winner, an honor shared with The Nobel Prize laureates Omar Yaghi, Marconi; Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche AG, Wernher von Braun, whose work underpins every spacecraft including NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Artemis spacecraft.

Prof. Shuguang is a leading scientist of the world with an h-index of 98 and ~43,000 citations, the creator of the field of self-assembling peptides, inventor of the QTY code.

He has created whole scientific fields, not just categories. His work represents the difference between engineering a slightly more efficient engine and discovering the foundational laws of thermodynamics.

He has a rare track record of turning foundational patents into companies, founding 3-D Matrix from his patent to a unicorn valuation on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Outonomous, with its patent moat and global ambition, who better to execute this from than Prof. Shuguang on a global scale?

Who better to guide a Physical AI company than someone who headed the Centre for Bits and Atoms at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and turned patents into whole companies multiple times?

His role at Outonomous is precise and consequential: Global strategic advisor on mission, scaling from 1->100->1,000->100,000 to 100,000,000 Outonomous units in the world.

Prof. Shuguang actually joined Outonomous in July 2025. Why did we wait?

Because you do not become a PhD on the first day you enter school.

We earned this win over the last year of working together.

We connected over a shared desire for global impact and neither of us started with boundless privilege. We rely on resilience and first-principles insight to create breakthroughs.

When we started Outonomous, we did not have unlimited resources. Yet we still built a modular autonomy platform for every vehicle. We still built a major IP portfolio. And we still solved persistent physical problems elegantly including using drones to eliminate sensor blindness by solving a physics problem with physics, instead of just throwing more computers, complexity, and money at the issue.

We are building for 8.2 billion people by improving the world’s 1.6 billion vehicles. Prof. Shuguang has already improved life at global scale through science, invention, teaching, and company creation.

We have a profound bias for people with real world execution: Prof. Jason Corso, Toyota Professor of AI (independently endorsed us https://lnkd.in/gUUwbfea), Robert Hulse of Fenwick & West, the patent strategist who helps turn companies into household names strategizes our IP strategy.

This is just one of the things we kept under wraps for a year.

Imagine what else Outonomous has up its sleeve.

Omar Mukhtar, Founder & CEO, Outonomous.
